Invisible Mountain by Carolina De Robertis

Invisible Mountain by Carolina De Robertis
Invisible Mountain by Carolina De Robertis

The sweep of a century, the hand of history, three women whose lives will never be the same again. As the twentieth century dawns, so begins one of the most dramatic periods in the history of South America. Women are emancipated, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro free Cuba, the Perons take power in Argentina, and three generations of Firielli women are to live, love, and fight for their independence and freedom. Pajarita is the founder of the dynasty, born into a rural village and constantly chafing against its narrow confines. A love-match with a circus performer offers her escape, but she is trapped in a cage of another sort when her husband becomes a monster. Her spirited daughter, Eva, enters a world shaken by revolution. Fleeing childhood abuse, and alienated from her mother, she heads to Buenos Aires, but the glittering circles she moves in cannot erase the memories of her past. Her daughter, Salome, driven by political passion becomes a guerrilla fighter, but her idealism turns to tragedy when she is captured, and brutalised. From bohemian Buenos Aires to the hills of Rio de Janeiro; from tangos to demonstrations; from the broad sweep of history to the intimate lives of the Fierelli family, THE INVISIBLE MOUNTAIN traverses a changing South America, in which some things - love, family, hope - continue forever.

Ghost Song by Sarah Rayne
The old Tarleton music hall on London's Bankside is the subject of a mysterious restraint order that has kept it closed for over ninety years. When Robert Fallon is asked to survey the building, he finds clues indicating that its long twilight sleep may contain a sinister secret. Joining forces with researcher Hilary Bryant, Robert discovers the legend of the Tarleton's 'ghost' - a mysterious figure who was first glimpsed during the time of the charismatic performer Toby Chance, once the darling of Edwardian audiences until he vanished suddenly and inexplicably in the early 1900s. After almost a century, the Tarleton's dark silence is about to end. But there are those who find its re-opening a threatening prospect and, as Robert and Hilary delve into the macabre history of one of London's oldest music halls, they both become menaced by the secrets of the past.

Nine Lives (Fighter Pilots) ... by Deere Albert

Nine Lives (Fighter Pilots) ...by Deere Albert
Nine Lives (Fighter Pilots) ...by Deere Albert

The renowned autobiography of New Zealand's most famous RAF pilot who saw action from the Munich Crisis to the invasion of France in 1944. Al Deere experienced the drama of the early days of the Battle of Britain while serving with Spitfire squadrons based at Hornchurch and Manston, and his compelling story tells of the successes and frustrations of those critical weeks. Deere's nine lives are the accounts of his fantastic luck in escaping from seemingly impossible situations. During the Battle of Britain he parachuted from stricken aircraft on three occasions and once was blown up by a bomb while taking off from Hornchurch during an attack on the airfield. In March 1943 Deere was appointed Wing Commander of the famous Biggin Hill Wing and by the end of the war, his distinguished 'score' was destroyed twenty-two, probables ten and damaged eighteen.

Mistress of Nothing by Kate Pullinger

Lady Duff Gordon is the toast of Victorian London. But when her debilitating tuberculosis means exile, she and her devoted lady's maid, Sally, set sail for Egypt. It is Sally who describes, with a mixture of wonder and trepidation, the odd menage marshalled by the resourceful Omar, which travels down the Nile to a new life in Luxor. When Lady Duff Gordon undoes her stays and takes to native dress, throwing herself into weekly salons; language lessons; excursions to the tombs; Sally too adapts to a new world, affording her heady and heartfelt freedoms never known before. But freedom is a luxury that a maid can ill-afford, and when Sally grasps more than her status entitles her to, she is brutally reminded that she is mistress of nothing.

A Whispered Name
A Whispered Name
To keep quiet about something so important ...well, it's almost a lie, wouldn't you say?' When Father Anselm meets Kate Seymour in the cemetery at Larkwood, he is dismayed to hear her allegation. Herbert Moore had been one of the founding fathers of the Priory, revered by all who met him, a man who'd shaped Anselm's own vocation. The idea that someone could look on his grave and speak of a lie is inconceivable. But Anselm soon learns that Herbert did indeed have secrets in his past that he kept hidden all his life. In 1917, during the terrible slaughter of the Passchendaele campaign, a soldier faced a court martial for desertion. Herbert, charged with a responsibility that would change the course of his life, sat upon the panel that judged him. In coming to understand the court martial, Anselm discovers its true significance: a secret victory that transformed the young Captain Moore and shone a light upon the horror of war.

Katie Fisher, one-time presenter of breakfast TV show Hello Britain!, nearly has her life in perfect order. She's recovered from her humiliating dismissal, improved her relationship with the drinks cabinet and, most importantly, found a gorgeous new TV producer boyfriend. Then she's offered a place on Celebrity X-treme - the latest celebrity-humiliating reality show. But is a reality TV program really a good idea? Will it save her career or be the final blow? And just how tempting are two weeks in a freezing cabin in Norway, with a group of people no one's quite heard of? Very tempting - when the pay check is that big. So Katie takes the risk - along with a page 3 model, an out-of-work soap actor, an old, failed comedian and some woman who had an affair with a politician. She's soon out of her depth, as scheming producers do everything in their power to get the show they want - it's going to take all Katie's good humour and bad puns to bounce back from this one.

Three Decades Of Asian Travel & Adventure

Three Decades Of Asian Travel & Adventure
Three Decades Of Asian Travel & Adventure
A new surge of interest in Asia, better transportation and accommodations, have made tourism in this part of the world a booming business. But Asian travel today is not the same as what it was decades ago. The difference lies in the vast number of visitors we have today, the ease with which one can travel and the information that's available to everyone. In the old days, only a handful were lucky-or rather tough enough-to have made it to distant lands over uncertain high seas. Most of them, driven by a sheer spirit of exploration, set out on a journey into the unknown just to satisfy a burning desire for travel and adventure.

Here is a collection of stories by a tenacious adventurer who outfitted his own sailing yacht, scoured the roughest mountain peaks, trekked the densest jungles and explored the most dangerous deep in Asian waters, and related his unique experiences in pages of well-written prose. Harold Stephens gives the readers a vivid idea of how it was to travel off the beaten track in Asia way back then. But most of all.

"This is more than a book about travel in Asia, and more than collection of tales of adventure. It is a wealth of candid observations about different customs and cultures from the pen of Harold Stephens the Philosopher." - Tony Walthham, The Bangkok Post

JAVA: A Travellers' Anthology

JAVA: A Travellers' Anthology
JAVA: A Travellers' Anthology
Java: A Travellers' Anthology contains accounts of Java by thirty-five Western travellers, most of them English or American. Their writings span the years from the earliest European contacts with the island to the mid-1980s. Through their eyes we see Java transformed from distant realm of wealth and danger into an orderly and prosperous Dutch colony and then, in the twentieth century, into the centre-piece of the Indonesian nation. Over the years, the 'Java' that armchair travellers of the English-speaking world came to know was largely shaped by witnesses like Thomas Stamford Raffles, Alfred Russel Wallace, Elizah Ruhamah Scidmore, S.J. Perelman, Frank and Helen Schreider, V.S Naipaul, and many others who appear in this volume. The tales also have much to tell us about the West itself and about its evolving relationship with the populous South-East Asian centre of civilization and power, and with its people.

Through Central Borneo

Through Central Borneo
Through Central Borneo
Dr Carl Lumholtz was a Norwegian explorer who travelled in Borneo between 1913 and 1917, and retraced the steps (in the reverse direction) of a fellow countryman, Carl Bock, whose work, The Head-Hunters of Borneo is also available as an Oxford Paperback.

First published in 1920, Through Central Borneo may perhaps have been one of the last of the great travel books about Borneo. Although in recent decades rarely a year has gone by without at least one book describing the adventures of some person braving the Borneo jungle as if no one had ever braved it before. Lumholtz's book, written when large tracts of Central Borneo were unexplored and unknown to the outside world, is of solid value and is an extremely readable and elegantly presented account of his journeys. What armchair traveller today will be able to resist such passages as the following: 'Anchoring at night, there are about five days travel on the majestic river, passing peaceful-looking kampungs where people live in touch with nature. A feeling of peace and contentment possessed me. "I do not think I shall miss even the newspaper, "I find written in my diary." Dr V.T King of the Centre for South-East Asian Studies in the University of Hull contributes an informative introduction to this reprint.

The Customer Revolution

The Customer Revolution
The Customer Revolution

You are no longer in control of your company's destiny

It happened in the music business and it will happen in yours. It's only a matter of time. Customers actually take control of an industry and reshape it from the outside in. Customers decide that the way they want to use an industry's product doesn't fit the current business model.

Patricia Seybold, author of the influential, bestselling Customers.com would say that that's a revolution. Thanks to the Internet and to mobile wireless devices, both business and consumer customers are demanding that you change your pricing structure, distribution channels, and the way you design and deliver products and services. Your business must be transformed so that it is completely customer-centric, or you will be out of business.

Her advice to companies facing the customer revolution? You can fight it if you want, just as Don Quixote fought imaginary windmills and thought he was winning battles. But naturally he lost the war and so will you. Better, says Seybold, to practice "sweet surrender," just as the music industry has started to come to terms with Napster. In the words of one music executive, "Thirty-eight million people can't be criminals."

Many try to characterize the changes taking place as the New Economy, the Internet economy, or the information, knowledge, or bio-economy. There's a grain of truth to all of these descriptions, but they fail to get to the heart of the changes taking place. Simply put, what we now have is a customer economy and it's going to result in changes that you would not have thought possible even a few short years ago.

Patricia Seybold has been on a worldwide quest to find the companies in North America, Europe, and Asia that are developing the state-of-the-art practices that will help them win in the new era of the customer economy. They're profiled and analyzed in case studies ranging from small businesses to multinational giants and range from manufacturers to retailers, and service firms. They include financial services giant Charles Schwab, the British Vauxhall Division of General Motors, Snap-on Tools, custom backpack manufacturer Timbuk2, Hewlett-Packard, Medscape, and W.W. Grainger.

As she so ably demonstrated in Customers.com, Patricia Seybold is ahead of the curve. For most companies, the issue of customers in control is just coming onto the radar screen. In The Customer Revolution Seybold makes it plain that this can be either your biggest problem or your greatest opportunity. What she provides is not only a brilliant analysis but also a practical program for how you can make the customer revolution a profitable one. The companies that thrive in the customer revolution will be those that measure and monitor what matters to customers, in near real time.

Power And Accountability

Power And Accountability
Power And Accountability
Corporations determine far more than any other institution the air we breathe, the quality of the water we drink, even where we live. Yet they are not accountable to anyone.
Why do bad stocks happen to good investors? Why do bad CEOs (the ones Fortune calls "Pharonic") happen to good companies? How do corporations impose the costs of environmental pollution, unsafe products, astronomical salaries, and overall lack of competitiveness and productivity on shareholders, consumers, and taxpayers? And who are the institutional investors-the 900-pound gorillas-who are transforming the financial markets? Power and Accountability has the answers.
