Organizational Behavior (Twelfth Edition) - Pearson International Edition

Organizational Behavior
Organizational Behavior (Twelfth Edition) - Pearson International Edition
Organizational Behavior (often abbreviated as OB) is a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge towards improving an organization's effectiveness. That's a mouthful, so let's break it down.

Organizational behavior is a field of study, meaning that it is a distinct area of expertise with a common body of knowledge. What does it study? It studies three determinants of behavior in organizations: individuals, groups, and structure. In addition, OB applies the knowledge gained about individuals, groups, and the effect of structure on behavior in order to make organizations work more effectively.

To sum up our definition, OB is concerned with the study of what people do in an organization and how their behavior affects the organization's performance. And because OB is concerned specifically with employment-related situations, you should not be surprised to find that it emphasizes behavior as related to concerns such as jobs, work, absenteeism, employment turnover, productivity, human performance, and management.

There is increasing agreement as to the components or topics that constitute the subject area of OB. Although there is still considerable debate as to the relative importance of each, there appears to be general agreement that OB includes the core topics of motivation, leader behavior and power, interpersonal communication, group structure and processes, learning, attitude development and perception, change processes, conflict, work design, and work stress.

West Federal Taxation: An Introduction to Business Entities (Edition 2003)

West Federal Taxation: An Introduction to Business Entities
West Federal Taxation: An Introduction to Business Entities (Edition 2003)
The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' Model Tax Curriculum Task Force recommended that the first tax course be taught using a business entities approach. The departure from the traditional approach in which the focal point is the individual taxpayer requires a different type of textbook and more integrated learning orientation.

The West Federation Taxation team has responded to this recommendation and related market need with the publication of West Federal Taxation: An Introduction to Business Entities. In designing a text that would reflect the Model Tax Curriculum program content for the first tax course, we responded to the changing needs of the tax education community. The outstanding traditional texts West Federal Taxation: Individual Income Taxes and West Federal Taxation: Corporations, Partnership, Estates, And Trusts serve a source volumes for some of the content. Where appropriate material was available in these volumes, it was adapted as necessary to meet the design objectives for an entities text. Where requisite material was unavailable, we created what our readers called for. Developing the text's content in this fashion is beneficial because the result is a text:
  • Whose source material has been market-tested and widely accepted for over 25 years.
  • Where organization, structure, and writing style promote readability and comprehension.
  • That emphasizes tax concepts and issues, not the details of tax rules.
  • Which allows professors to modify their approach for the first tax course on an incremental basis rather than on a radical basis.
  • Whose ancillaries contain content that has been market-tested and used energetically for over 25 years.
  • Which meets the high, professional standards of a West Federation Taxation text.
  • Which meets the Model Tax Curriculum suggested program content objectives for the first tax course.
  • That prepares its readers for the future, practicing in consulting and tax positions, succeeding in attaining further credentials and certifications, and demanding continuing education in tax law and policy.

All Consumers Are Not Created Equal : The Differential Marketing Strategy for Brand Loyalty and Profits

All Consumers Are Not Created Equal : The Differential Marketing Strategy for Brand Loyalty and Profits
All Consumers Are Not Created Equal : The Differential Marketing Strategy for Brand Loyalty and Profits
"....This book....will open your eyes to a new marketing concept which may turn our to be of major importance." - David Ogilvy

All consumers are NOT created equal. Some are vastly more profitable than others, and the marketers who succeed in an increasingly brand-hostile and technology-driven environment will be those who know how to capitalize on the difference.

Differential Marketing is a revolutionary new approach that separates the golden eggs from the goose eggs. It uses cutting-edge but practical technology and practices to build old-fashioned brand loyalty-and old-fashioned profits-by communicating more directly and persuasively with the brand's most valuable customers. And it does so across all disciplines-advertising, sales promotion, and direct marketing.

Developed at one of the world's leading marketing communications agencies, Ogilvy & Mather, and proven in the marketplace by clients like Kraft, Unilever, Kimberly-Clark, and Seagram, this breakthrough approach to building stronger brands turns conventional marketing wisdom inside out:

True or False? Most of the profits of many brands-even big brands-come from less than ten percent of all households.

True or False? A brand's most valuable customers give more of their business to the competition than they do to the brand.

True or False? The overwhelming majority of brand volume comes from consumers who don't count or don't care.

All are true. And what they add up to is the need for a radical alternative to current mass market communication methods. Differential Marketing is an overarching concept that combines the power of consumer database, integrated marketing, and one-to-one relationship building to produce double-digit sales increases from high-profit customers.

In All Consumers Are Not Created Equal, author Garth Hallberg provides the inside perspective on what makes Differential Marketing so effective. Best of all, he not only serves up a powerful new vision, but also offers practical advice about how to put it to work to build a healthier, more profitable brand.

In Praise Of Good Business

In Praise Of Good Business
In Praise Of Good Business
"Judith Bardwick really dishes it out in this challenging book and does it in her own unique style. She...brilliantly illuminate[s] the darkness around innovation and risk and its enemy, entropy. What shines through is a seminal achievement of how organizations can maintain a delicate balance between risk and recklessness."-Warren Bennis, author of Organizing Genius

"...an excellent resource for any CEO faced with transforming a 'no-consequence' culture into one of 'reality-driven action.' Her insights ring true and are tremendously reassuring to those of us facing intense and/or very different competition for the first time."-Erroll B. Davis, Jr. President and CEO, Alliant

"Judy Bardwick here sets out a bold new management paradigm, where employees learn to take risks and accept accountability. A powerful and long overdue message."-David G. Robinson, President, CSC Index

"Insightful, thought-provoking insights into human behavior and leadership...a must-read book."-Ned Barnholt, Executive Vice President, General Manager, Test and Measurement Organization, Hewlett-Packard

"Every living system, including human beings, needs a certain amount of tension to operate at its best. People achieve the highest levels they're capable of, and feel more vividly alive, when they're challenged by risks."-Judith Bardwick

In Praise of Good Business celebrates the great business turnaround of the 1990s. But it does more than that. It shows the management skills needed to continue the management revolution. In her 1991 international bestseller, Danger in the Comfort Zone, Judith Bardwick showed the basis for the hard management decisions that provided the framework for the American economic resurgence. She now cautions us not to rest on our success and lays out very specifically how we need to manage in the new economic environment.

Drawing on her work both as a psychologist specializing in management psychology and her 25 years as a consultant to the Fortune 500, Dr. Bardwick explains how and why the benefits of today's best business practices-those forged in the crucible of a global marketplace-extend well beyond a healthy balance sheet. Human beings thrive on manageable risk, and, by compelling employees to take more risks, accept more responsibility and succeed, business is not only achieving record profits, but it is also helping to create psychologically healthier people and a more resilient society.

To more vividly illustrate her points, Dr. Bardwick presents fascinating and instructive case studies of uniquely successful companies across North America. From these she extracts valuable object lessons and action steps, and she develops a revolutionary new management model based on the principle of productive insecurity. A style of management pitched to the demands of a "borderless economy," her prescriptive approach entails steering a middle path between the macho, show-no-mercy downsizing approach and the "no-consequences" model of too much security and too little accountability. Both, she contends, are a leading cause of company failures.

In Praise of Good Business presents a very positive message. Offering an elegant, highly doable prescription for creating more courageous, self-reliant employees ready to meet the challenges of today's supercompetitive global economy, In Praise of Good Business is an invaluable working resource for executives and managers in organizations of all sizes. Far-reaching and grounded in the very nature of the human psyche, this is the only management book you'll ever need.

In her more than two decades as a consultant and speaker, Dr. Bardwick has researched and contributed much to broaden business's understand-ing of the key contributing factors to human and organizational effectiveness. Her client list includes dozens of Fortune 500 companies, including Hewlett Packard, Champion Paper, IBM, Andersen Consulting, and National Steel.

Money Talks, Bullsh*t Walks (Hardcover)

Money Talks, Bullsh*t Walks (Hardcover)
Money Talks, Bullsh*t Walks (Hardcover)
"The challenge is, how do we get somebody 126 years old to get it up?" This was Sam Zell's unique way of saying hello to a large gathering at the Los Angeles Times shortly after taking charge of Tribune Company. "I'm your Viagra, OK?"

Even for Sam Zell, one of the greatest contrarian investors, buying Tribune Company was a risky and controversial move. Many saw the purchase of the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times by a man who had made his fortune in cargo containers, real estate, fertilizer, and plumbing to be a sign of the coming media apocalypse. Maybe they were frightened by Zell's nickname, "the Grave Dancer."

The move didn't seem to make sense for Zell either. Why would an epithet-slinging, motorcycle-riding scrapper-who had started with nothing and worked his way up to a $5 billion real estate fortune-be interested in a declining media company (it would have been another story if Zell had taken over Playboy, issues of which Zell had bought and resold for profit to friends around town when he was a teenager)?

Ben Johnson has the answers in this fascinating biography of a uniquely colorful mogul, who is fond of blunt declarations and bold business moves. Johnson also tells the real story of Zell's adventure at the Tribune, that feverish year between his purchase of the ailing company and its declaration of bankruptcy.

Between the story of Zell's rise to astounding riches and previously untold details of his conflicts with his employees and investors, Money Talks, Bullsh*t Walks will keep readers alternately laughing and on the edge of their seats.

The Quotable Sam Zell
"If you're the biggest kid on the block, you can throw your weight around. Of course, I never was the big kid, but I've made up for it over the years."

"The true test of an entrepreneur is someone who spends his life constantly testing his limits. The definition of an idiot is someone who has reached their goals."

"I don't do business with anybody who's not afraid, and I won't hire anybody who is confident to the point where fear is not very close to the surface. I've often said that fear and courage are cousins and very closely related."

"Extremism in the pursuit of opportunity is not a vice. If you've seen me step over the edge, it's only to get you to take a few steps toward the line."

"The eleventh commandment is Thou shalt not take oneself seriously."

"The best thing to have in the world is a monopoly, and if you can't have a monopoly, you want an oligopoly. I'm more than willing to leave all the rest of the highly competitive world to everybody else."

"To create an enormously successful corporation that provides both opportunity and sustenance for employers today and a future for them tomorrow, that's the challenge. That's what everybody should be talking about. Not my f*cking language because it doesn't matter."

"I think it was Confucius who said that 'Money talks and bullshit walks."

The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe

The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe
The Martial Arts of Renaissance Europe
Balletic homicide on the duelling field; stabbing and wrestling in tavern brawls; deceits and brutalities in street affrays; mounted encounters by armoured knights locked in desperate hand-to-hand combat - these were the martial arts of Renaissance Europe. In this book Sydney Anglo, a leading historian of the Renaissance and its symbolism, provides the first complete study of the martial arts from the late fifteenth to the late seventeenth centuries. The twentieth century has been captivated by oriental martial arts and their roots within Eastern societies. Yet the West too, as Anglo shows, developed its own styles of ritualised combat, similarly linked to contemporary social and scientific concerns. During the Renaissance physical exercise was regarded as central to the education of knights and gentlemen. Soldiers wielded a variety of weapons on the battlefield, and it was normal for civilians to carry swords and know how to use them.

In schools across the continent, professional masters-of-arms were the artists who taught the lethal skills necessary to survive in a society where violence was endemic and life cheap. These ancient masters-of-arms, anxious to advertise their skills and record them for posterity, have left a wealth of evidence to reconstruct and illustrate their arts - much of it used here for the first time: detailed scholarly treatises, sketches by jobbing artists or magnificent images by D|rer and Cranach, descriptions of real combat, and an abundance of weapons and armour. With copious and precise illustration, Anglo explains the significance of martial arts in Renaissance education and everyday life. His book provides the fullest illustrated account of the social implications of one-to-one combat training.

Elements of Banking (Macmillan College Work Out Series)

Elements of Banking (Macmillan College Work Out Series),Banking
Elements of Banking (Macmillan College Work Out Series)
This book is intended for the reader who has an existing knowledge of the subject and who wishes to consolidate his (or her) knowledge in preparation for an examination. Each chapter deals with a different subject area and gives a pithy summary of the main topics in that area on which examination questions are likely to be asked. This concise summary is ideal for revision purposes. It cuts out those parts of the textbooks which are less important and concentrates on what the reader really needs to know for examination purposes. Given that he has already carried out a serious study of Elements of Banking he should be able to identify and understand all the points that are listed and correlate them in the way that is necessary in answering an examination questions.

The reader should read through the text of the chapter, two or three times if necessary, memorising the main points and testing himself (herself) to be sure that he has mastered them. Then read through the examples of examination questions, but before reading the solutions a very worthwhile exercise would be to jot down in a notebook the main points that you would expect to find the solution, putting those points into some sort of logical order. Then compare your framework with the answer given, noting any additional points and also referring in your notebook to any new slant to the subject which comes to light. Additional questions are given after example questions and solutions for the reader to work out his own framework answer.

Providing the reader with a summary of the main topics covered in the Institute of Bankers Stage I examinations and also those University and Polytechnic examinations requiring a knowledge of the US banking system, this book concentrates on the information required for examination purposes and the text is supplemented by many worked examples.

Liberalizing Foreign Trade: Lessons of Experience in the Developing World (Volume 7)

Liberalizing Foreign Trade: Lessons of Experience in the Developing World (Volume 7)
Liberalizing Foreign Trade: Lessons of Experience in the Developing World (Volume 7)
"Trade liberalization" implies any change which leads a country's trade system toward neutrality in the sense of bringing its economy closer to the situation which would prevail if there were no governmental interference in the trade system. Put in words, the new trade system confers no discernible incentives to either the importable or the exportable activities of the economy.

By "episode" we mean a period long enough to accommodate a significant run of liberalization acts terminating either in a swing away from liberalization or in a period where policy changes one way or another cease to be apparent.

The "episode of liberalization" thus defined is the unit of observation and analysis employed in each of our country studies.

An Introduction To Sociolinguistics (2nd Edition)

An Introduction To Sociolinguistics (2nd Edition)
An Introduction To Sociolinguistics (2nd Edition)
Sociolinguistics study the relationship between language and society. They are interested in explaining why we speak differently in different social context, and they are concerned with identifying the social functions of language and the ways it is used to convey social meaning. Examining the way people use language in different social context provides a wealth of information about the way language works, as well as about the social relationships in a community, and the way people signal aspects of their social identity through their language. This book will explore all these aspects of sociolinguistic study.

This new edition has been updated thoroughly throughout, and adds new sections on social constructionist approaches to language and gender, and the concept of community of practice. There is also a completely new chapter on language, cognition and culture, which introduces students to the ideas of Benjamin Lee Whorf, as well as to the wider implications of the important concept of linguistic relativity.

Containing a series of student exercises and suggestions for further reading. An Introduction to Sociolinguistics is an essential introductory text for students of sociolinguistics and anyone interested in the study of language.

Organizational Communication : Balancing Creativity and Constraint

Organizational Communication : Balancing Creativity and Constraint
Organizational Communication : Balancing Creativity and Constraint
The purpose of Organizational Communication, then, is to describe the role and importance of organizational communication within an evolving social context. In doing so, we point out the tried and true business pathways that are now dead ends, as well as those routes that lead in promising future directions. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive text that focuses on current business practices, while at the same time offering a thorough reconsideration of the history, theories, and research on communication and organizations.

The text is presented in two parts:
  • In Part I, "Theories Of Organizational and Communication,"Chapter 1 and 2 begin our discussion of the role of communication in business, and the evolution of theories of communication in our understanding of organizations. Chapter 3 through 6 explore theories of organizations and communication within the historical and cultural periods that produced them.
  • In Part II, "Contexts," Chapters 7 through 9 analyze current organizational communication practice at three levels: the individual, the relationship, and the group. Chapter 10 and 11 explore the connections between communication and the financial viability of a business, along with the future of organizational communication in general.
